30 Days of Yoga: A Quest For Balance

Last Saturday my wife and I started a “Yoga Challenge” - we pledged, along with a group of other yogis and yoginis at our studio, to practice yoga every day for 30 days.

As part of the challenge, we were asked by the organizers to state our reasons for participating, and the results we hoped to achieve.

My reason was simple - I like challenges.

The opportunity to kick up my fledgling yoga practice (now 7 months old) a few notches to test myself was too tempting to pass up. To do it as part of a supportive community made it even more enticing.

What about the results I wanted? I look at challenges as learning journeys - I always hope to come out of them knowing more about myself than when I started.

I want to learn - that’s my intention. I’ve found that setting such an intention before I get started on something like this is so very important.

I know this isn’t going to be a cake walk. I’ll be traveling half the time, so I’ll need to be much more organized with my days on the road than I’m used to. And disciplined.

The upshot is what I’m finding to be the ultimate benefit of the yoga practice - a stronger sense of balance between the external demands of my life and the need to take time for myself to search for answers within.

Our yoga teachers tell us about finding the “ease” in our poses, and how that ease can extend to how we live our lives. I want to explore this over the next 30 days, and see what I learn.

I’ll let you know what I find out.
