It’s a little known fact that in addition to his important duties as a Jedi Master, Yoda has been behind the scenes training many of us in the ways of Social Media.
It’s a treat to be able to share with you just a little of his wisdom here.
Starbucker: Hello, master Yoda, can you offer some words of wisdom to us today?
Yoda: Help you I can! Yes, Mmmmm…
Starbucker: Much like the force, you look at Social Meda as an “ally”. That’s a cool analogy. Can you explain that?
Yoda: A powerful ally it is. Life creates it, makes it grow. Its energy surrounds us… and binds us. Luminous beings are we, not this… [nudging Terry's arm] crude matter!
Starbucker: Whoh, Social Media is an energy like the Force? Nah, can’t be.
Yoda: That is why you fail.
Starbucker: Maybe you’re right. But it is quite a different way of looking at it.
Yoda: Only different in your mind. You must unlearn what you have learned.
Starbucker: OK, OK, Yoda. But isn’t there a dark side to Social Media too, just like the Force?
Yoda: Beware the dark side. Anger, fear, aggression. Easily they flow, quick to join you in a fight. If once you start down the dark path, forever will it dominate your destiny.
Starbucker: I think I’ve seen this – the trolls and naysayers, right? Those that dwell on the negative. But how can you tell the difference in only 140 characters?
Yoda: You will know… when you are calm, at peace, passive…
Starbucker: It depends on HOW I see things? Mmm, that’s quite interesting. And so, if I was on the right side of Social Media, being calm and at peace, what should I be using it for?
Yoda: For knowledge and defense, never for attack.
Starbucker: Right. There’s a lot a talk out there about the size of your following, and how important that is. What’s your take?
Yoda: Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size do you?
Starbucker: Of course not, Master Yoda – last I checked you had zero followers on Twitter, so point taken. A couple more questions, if I may. What’s the best way to use Social Media for good?
Yoda: Decide you must how to serve them best. A Jedi must have the deepest commitment, the most serious mind.
Starbucker: So I really need that Jedi mind set. Boy, that’s tough though. I will try my best Master Yoda.
Yoda: No! Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.
Starbucker: Yes, yes – didn’t you say this once before, to my buddy Luke? That’s easy for you to say, you’re YODA!
Yoda: Always with you it cannot be done. Hear you nothing that I say?
Starbucker: Sorry, my friend, I’ll work on that the next time. Thanks for your time.
So there you have it, Social Media according to Yoda.
Or, more accurately, one man’s obsession with “The Empire Strikes Back”, and the effect that movie (and Yoda) had on me.
May the force be with you – always.
