It’s no big secret in my SOBCon circles (or any of my friend circles, for that matter) that I like to sing. In fact, I sang “You’ll Never Walk Alone” - in an opera voice, no less – during my recent keynote speech at our 2010 event in Chicago.
Given this predilection (I waited 652 posts to use that word), it’s probably no surprise that I am planning on belting out a tune at our upcoming SOBCon Colorado (on September 17 & 18). More specifically, I’m going to do it at our Friday night reception on the 17th.
And here’s where we spice this up a little bit – Liz and I want YOU to pick the song I sing .
Even better, we will be awarding a FREE – that’s right, FREE – trip to SOBCon Colorado to one of the “pickers”.
A free registration, a free hotel for two nights, and free air (up to $500).
Because we’re crazy (to answer this question ahead of time).
Here’s how this will work:
- First, we need song nominees. It has to be, in the eyes of the official judges, a pop or rock song that is sufficiently “anthem-like” to qualify for the “Starbucker treatment”. And, it has to be from the decades of the 70’s, 80’s, or 90’s. Plus, it has to be available in karaoke form.
- Nominations will be taken from today through July 29 – through a comment to this post, or through a Tweet with the hashtag “#sobconsong“
- All qualifying nominations will receive, for their trouble, a $50 discount coupon for a registration to SOBCon Colorado
- On (or around) July 30th, I will post the nominees on this blog, along with a link to an official ballot.
- All those who then vote on the winning song will be registered for a random drawing to select the winner of the FREE trip to SOBCon Colorado on August 16th
I look forward to adding to your entertainment value on September 17th. I hope.
Thanks in advance for your song suggestions!

Hmm, pop or rock from the 60s-90s – that excludes the “Impossible Dream”. “Livin’ on a Prayer” was already done at SOBCon Chicago. “We Are the Champions!”…I’ll keep thinking…
Hi Glenda – for you, my friend, the selection committee would be happy to include “The Impossible Dream”, since we’re sure there was a version released during the qualifying period. So it’s in.
Thanks for the comment!
Terry
Of course “I Did It My Way” It has been recorded by everyone. I think it’s fits you and the other SOBcon business people.
Silly me, wrong website link first time.
How about Billy Joel’s “It’s a Matter of Trust”?
Circle by Harry Chapin
Thanks MissDazey, Dave, and Steve for your suggestions – all excellent choices, and I think, in my key!
Have a great weekend,
Terry
I got two and I can’t decide–sorry. My top one would be “Respect” by Aretha Franklin and then “Born to Run” by Springsteen. A little diversity there, but I’d go with Respect for #1
I have to pick ? “Stuck in the Middle with you- Steelers Wheel” It has all the right words. I will even sign it with you
. Granted the big 50 for me is in August, but Oo what a nice birthday present that would be. Good luck to everyone.
Hi Chris and Gabriella! Chris, nothing like a guy like me singing Aretha Franklin songs.
Gabriella, I love that song – I played the 45 a million times when it came out (in the early 70’s, I believe). And Happy 50th Birthday!!
Thanks to you both,
Terry
Terry–I suggest Brick House. Perhaps not anthem-like, but sure to bring the crowd to its feet. @philgerb would be dancing in the aisle by the fourth bar.
Hi Rick – Ah yes, the Commodores. Thanks for that suggestion – if it wins, I can only hope to bring to that song the gravitas it demands.
All the best,
Terry
Terry, here is a perfect one, given SOBCon’s thrust … “Takin Care of Business” by BTO
Awesome!
Mike
That’s a great one Mike – the first rock concert I ever attended was a BTO show, back in 1974.
Thanks for the suggestion, and yes, SOBCon is all about Takin’ Care of Business!
All the best,
Terry
There’s a cool, lesser known song from Queen’ that Freddy Mercury belts out called “I want to break free”. Has great Anthem quality, but I would imagine difficult to find in a karaoke version (but maybe).
Fun idea. Don’t know if Colorado fits my schedule, but have you guys on my radar for a future SOBCon.
Keep Rockin’
Hi Lou – I know that Queen song well, and it does indeed have anthem quality. It’s on the list (and one way or another I’ll find a karaoke version if it is selected)
And yes, do join us at a future SOBCon! We would love to meet you.
Thanks!
Terry
Terry,
“Right Here, Right Now” (there is no other place I’d rather be…!) by Jesus Jones seems the perfect song for SOBCon
A few other thoughts…
The Flame by Cheap Trick
Higher by Creed
And though not right for SOBCon, I’d love to hear you do Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah some day…
@LisaPetrilli
Hi Lisa, thanks for your suggestions! Tell ya what, I’ll try Hallelujah at Chicago 2011’s karaoke night.
All the best,
Terry
Terry,
“You’re moves are so raw, I just gotta let you know…. You’re one of my kind”. If you take this song out of its original sexual context, “Need You Tonite” by INXS lyrically has a great SOBcon’esque message (or maybe I’m just trying to hard here *grin*).
Otherwise, I think these two Phil Collins songs would be great for Starbucker treatment: “In the Air Tonight” or “Take me Home”.
I have a feeling whichever song makes the cut, you’ll rock it.
Good luck,
Justin
@mccJustin
“Let’s Give Them Something to Talk (Tweet) About,” by Bonnie Raitt. SOBCon-themed, so many variations to rock (interchanging lyrics for blog, tweet, post, etc.) Cheers, and good luck. – @tweetmcg
Hmm…
I’m going with “Dancing in the Dark” by The Boss.
After all, “…you can’t start a fire without a spark…”
Love this, Terry. Fantastic idea!
Hey Justin, Lisa, and Bryon – thanks for your suggestions!
Justin, I see where you are going with that INXS tune – it’s on the list!
(and the Collins tunes- love those too)
Lisa, love Bonnie Raitt. Love that track. It’s in!
Bryon, the Boss is THE MAN. Just sayin’.
Thanks all,
Terry
Not so much pop/rock, but a weird suggestion for Denver: a song from the musical Unsinkable Molly Brown. Definitely anthem quality (groans all around). C’mon … “I Ain’t Down Yet” sung by Molly Brown. Or “Colorado My Home” sung by Leadville Johnny / Harve Presnell. Movie 1964, Broadway 1960.
HI Kathleen, and thanks for stopping by. I’m going to check those songs out (I’m afraid I don’t know them, although I love the titles).
Thanks again, and all the best!
Terry
Okay, Terry. I’m going to set the bar pretty high here…
I want to hear “I Dreamed A Dream” ala Susan Boyle from the whole Britain’s Got Talent thing.
I know you can do it. Terry’s Got Talent!
Ooops just realized I wrote the wrong song title in the email Terry. It’s Here I Go Again by Whitesnake!
If selected the performance must include a blonde curly long hair wig…hehehe!
Susan, I figured that was the song you meant. A wig is on order, just in case.
Thanks for the suggestion!
Terry
My friend Andrew Clark made these suggestions via e-mail:
Okay Terry—
While I’d LOVE to see you and / or Liz do a ballsy rendition of “Lay It On The Line” by Triumph { http://tinyurl.com/2dokrhb } I think that departs from anthem a bit and portrays too much apprehension and risk to the audience… Then there’s the ol’ “Fem-Standard” “I Am Woman” by Helen Reddy { http://tinyurl.com/26o5s3x }, but while Liz, I’m sure, would revel in the spirit; I’d hate to compromise your reputation in such a way.
I think picking an anthem that paints a better picture of the chaos and excitement of social media would be more appropriate. So my nomination for the SOBCon Kakroke Anthem (sung by Terry Starbucker and / or Liz Strauss) should be none other than the classic 1987 rock anthem “Welcome To The Jungle” by those lovely boys from Los Angeles, Guns-N-Roses { http://tinyurl.com/d4n69z }
Apt? Who knows… Entertaining? Guaranteed!
Keep Cooking! (songs that make your heart sing and your mind race)
Andrew B. Clark
The Brand Chef
My real pick is…
“Don’t Stop Believin’,” Journey < because you need to believe in yourself before others will believe in you!
Also "All along the watchtower" Hendrix could really be done great as a cover!
but because we're all social media types…
"Never Gonna Give You Up," Rick Astley because of social media we now have a term called rockrolled
If you dont like mine I vote for “Takin Care of Business” by BTO
Hi! I can’t argue with that Journey song, or the Hendrix, OR the Rick Astley. I’ll put ‘em all on the list.
We’ll see how the vote goes.
Thanks, and all the best.
Terry
