People have not changed one whit, the only difference is the ability to travel. In the past, we were forced to be loyal to employers, and they to us (to a lesser extent) because we had a co-dependent relationship based on geographical necessity. Now, we can travel from city to city, work and become friends online, commute to work and even move to another town, state or country if we wish.

Likewise employers can find what they need from a much larger pool. Same goes for friends. People have always been opportunistic. They will keep the really great friendships and jobs and employers/employees will do whatever they must to hang on to whatever they have got - but give them lots of choices and the goal posts shift.

There is nothing new under the sun, only different ways of expressing it.

Hi Kristin - thanks for your comment. You raise a very good point about loyalty and reciprocity. It's really tough when it's a one way street. As a leader I know I have to talk the talk AND walk the walk when it comes to fostering loyalty. And you are right, it will happen quite naturally as long as there is integrity to back it up. Thanks again for your thoughts, and all the best!

Hi there. I believe loyalty is so important in this day and age. One thing I found helpful in thinking about loyalty was learning the dynamics of dysfunctional families, which contain systems that mirror orgs, workplaces, etc. Sometimes in unhealthy systems the loyalty is at the expense of loyalty to the highest values of integrity that should be standard and that make effective orgs. Also, I have found myself wanting to be to loyal so many times, but having grown older and wiser realize that my loyalty is an investmen, and now I invest with caution. I am not obligated to be loyal to someone or something that feels no responsibility to be loyal to me. Also, if leadership is loyal to the highest values of integrity they will naturally be loyal to me, and I will be naturally loyal to them.
