There’s a little French expression that I always liked as a means to explain that little extra “something” that distinguished a person, an action, a place, a song, or any other focus of attention – “je ne sais quoi“.
Literally translated, “I don’t know what“. As the definition says, “A quality or attribute that is difficult to describe or express”. Those people, places or things possessing this quirky “quality” always stand out – in fact, they typically provide an extra dose of positive energy that makes a huge difference for anyone who comes under their spell.
Mountains have this quality for me – I don’t know what it is, but I never fail to have my spirits lifted by the sight of them. Yep, the “je ne sais quoi”.
Lately, however, I’ve discovered a better way to describe all this – and a much funnier and distinctive way to boot. And it’s not in a foreign language.
Remember that SNL skit about 7 years ago with Will Ferrell and on of my favorite actors, Christopher Walken? Walken played a record producer that implored the members of Blue Oyster Cult to add “more cowbell” to their record “Don’t Fear the Reaper“. Ferrell, utterly hilarious, played a character called Gene Frenkle (see the picture on this post) who played the cowbell.
I still can’t watch this thing without rolling over in laughter. Walken in particular just kills me. (Here’s the video - watch it and then read the rest of this). His line readings and cadence are perfect. Walken’s line that comes at the climax of the bit is the one that sticks in my mind the most:
“I got a fever, and the only prescription… is more cowbell!”
Exactly.
You take an ordinary situation, or song, or anything, and if you really want to make it different, you add “more cowbell“.
I want to spice up a manager’s meeting next week, so we’re going to go on a field trip and explore Yellowstone park as part of it – more cowbell.
I wanted to thank my staff for their hard work, so I sang them a thank you - more cowbell
Rather than take a short fight, I’d rather drive for 4 hours and enjoy the view – more cowbell
This kind of off the wall thinking is perfect for these hot, stifling summer days – instead of wondering how I’m going to stay out of the heat, I’m figuring out how to add more cowbell to my everyday activities. I want to be Gene Frenkle prancing around the studio, “exploring the studio space” with his cowbell.
Yep, I’ve got the fever, so listen for the cowbell. Keep smiling and add some cowbell to your life this summer as well- and that “je ne sais quoi” will be part of you too.

Terry – Your Yellowstone meeting sounds like a great idea. I have often thought that it would be great if a management team went to see a Cirque de Soleil the night before an all day planning session. Cowbell on crack.
I love Walken too – he does have that something special, I don’t know what.
When I was much younger, I remember asking a guy – who I thought was way out of my league (looking back, he wasn’t), what he saw in me. He said I had je ne sais quoi – I loved that answer.
Lisa Haneberg
Terry,
I love it! We can all use more cowbell in our lives.
And, Walken is an all-time SNL fav. His “Continental” character is a classic.
Hi Lisa and Mary – thanks for stopping by.
Lisa, having just seen “Knocked Up” where there’s a scene where two guys get freaked out at a Cirque de Soleil show, I think you are really onto something there.
. And yes, you are right about Walken. I start laughing even before he speaks these days.
Mary, I really loved that “Continential” sketch too. I just crack up. Lisa is right – he’s a living “je ne sais quoi”.
All the best to you both.
What a great post. It is very inspiring to see people all over the internet giving to others with a little sense of humor. I plan on ringing my cowbell the rest of the day.
This is cracking me up. I’m a part of the cult that adores the “more cowbell” skit. In fact, we had a great Will Farrell SNL dvd around our house that was full of the wackiest appearances (including “cowbell”) and we couldn’t stop watching it. Sadly, the dvd disappeared and no one owns up to having it.
Coincidentally, I have collected bells since I was a kid and now whenever my granddaugher is over and picks up one of several cowbells in my collection, I just lose it.
And that Walken: who would ever have thought that the weird guy from “DeerSlayer” would end up with a comic career!
Je ne sais quoi…great post for starting the day right, Terry.
I’m thinking about taking a cowbell to the next presentation I do to 1.) get everyone’s attention and 2.) also drive home the point their business needs more cowbell per whatever I’m talking about!
Hopefull Apple will make things right and provide a Cowbell ringtone for the iPhone!
Thanks Tina, Katie, , and Patrick for stopping by (and sorry about the delay in responding).
Tina, thanks for your kind words and keep those cowbells clanging!
Katie, I need to get that Ferrill video – he’s such a riot. Hope you can find yours! Keep clanging those cowbells too!
Patrick, I’d love to have a video of you using the cowbell in one of your presentations (great idea, by the way).
All the best to each of you.
What a great take on adding more spice to your life! Thanks for the reminder….and yes, that skit was hilarious! Just laughing about it the other night as a matter of fact.
Warmly,

Thanks Donna! Have a great holiday weekend.
