I’m in Denver today, in the midst of a week of work and a few days of vacation (we’re off to Los Angeles tomorrow).
While I’ve already shared some great advice for a long and fulfilling life from my 100 year-old grandmother, I wanted to share a little tidbit I saw in the Denver Post today – Oscar Simmons, an ex-Post employee, celebrated his 100th birthday yesterday, and he passed along his top five tips for long life (my comments in parenthesis):
- “Listen a Whole Lot More Than You Talk” (amen!)
- “Surround Yourself With Good Company” (the value of friends and family is priceless)
- “Live Clean” (i.e. don’t work in a coal mine or in any other kind of environmental mess)
- “Stay Active” (totally agree – we shouldn’t ever stop the music)
- “Stay Informed” (brain exercise and continuous learning – I’m sure on board with that!)
What I find so fascinating is the utter simplicity of the advice we get from those who have thrived and survived for so long. Great food for thought for all of us “youngsters”. Thanks Oscar, and Happy Birthday!

I was on a teleseminar last night in which the 95 year old Art Linkletter said that the greatest tip for a long life is to love what you do. Kudos to your grandmother for having celebrated the 80th anniversary of her 20th birthday!
Thanks Herman for your comment, and for your kind wishes for my grandmother. All the best!
