More From Mopey and Harry: It’s Tax(ing) Season
Filed Under: Half-Fullism • Personal Development • The Lighter Side
My good friends Mopey Murphy and Harry Halffull reappeared this week, in the wake of a flurry of events and travel that has “taxed” me quite a bit.
In our last conversation, Mopey was wondering if I could keep up the grueling pace that I had maintained in 2006 and was planning for 2007. Harry was betting that I could.
Let’s listen in to their recent chatting:
Mopey: So Harry, have you seen the bags under Starbucker’s eyes lately - first, it was having to get his taxes done before he went on the road; I loved it when he slumped in front of the computer when the realization sunk in that he had to cut a couple of big checks! Then, his basement started leaking again while he was out of town, and it looks like he may need to replace a bunch of windows. My law is kicking in! He’s going down!
Harry: Tsk Tsk Mopey. Haven’t you been reading his blog? Looks like he had a great visit with his grandmother and family - and listen to his podcast; does that sound like a guy who’s down in the dumps?
Mopey: He was in the drama club in college Harry, so it could have been an act. This guy’s travel schedule has been brutal - plus, his business demands have been as intense as ever. They just gave him more responsibility too. It’s the perfect recipe for disaster!
Harry: I guess you are entitled to your opinion Mopey; I would take the opposite view - this man is having the time of his life. This is what makes him vital and happy; he NEEDS to have all this activity swirling around him. Don’t you remember, happiness through chaos?
Mopey: A ruse, pure and simple. He’s in denial. He can’t juggle all this and be effective. The dark side beckons………and I’ll be here waiting, saying “I told you so”.
Harry: Fat chance. Here’s an example - he could have gone off the deep end when he found out he’ll probably need to replace all the back windows on his house, but he instead chose to focus on the benefits of installing more insulated windows that would be more energy efficient and sound proofed - and he can get a tax credit for that too! If that ain’t half-fullism in action, I don’t know what is!
Mopey: Let’s see how that glass looks when he gets the bill. Plus I checked his travel schedule - it isn’t getting any better. And what about that Chicago thing- what is it called, SOBCon? He’s appearing at a convention of sobbers! See, he IS going to the dark side!
Harry: Shows what you know, Mr. “Everything Has to Go Wrong or it Ain’t Right”. SOB means “Successful and Outstanding Blogger”. Nothing Half-Empty about that.
Mopey: Oh…………never mind……..so about those taxes…….
Harry:
Thanks Harry for your unwavering support - I really needed you this week since I was a little busy and couldn’t take on Mopey myself.
And yes, all my tax stuff was filed on time, and I’m back home today with the sun shining as I type this - so what if I have a couple of bags under my eyes; it builds character, right?
Have a great weekend everyone!

No problem starbucker. The chat between Mopey and Harry was a fun read and inspired me to add you to my blogroll. About two weeks ago, Murphy’s Law derailed me three times within one week. The next week, I came up with the following strategy for handling Murphy:
I call it the ABC’s of dealing with Murphy:
1. Anticipate what might go wrong
When Murphy struck at me I did not see it coming at all. All week I had prepared for all my engagements with complete confidence that everything was going to go as planned. This was a little naive from a leadership standpoint. My game plan now is to anticipate what might go wrong so that when it does go wrong, I can deal effectively with it.
2. Bring yourself to a state of calmness
Murphy left me in a panic because of the element of surprise. I failed to consciously make the choice of staying calm - actually when I talked to a good friend, I used the word “flustered”. I was upset that I hadn’t made it for some of the highlights of my week.
3. Create systems that allow for success
Success in any endeavor is all about having the right systems. I took a good look at all the systems in my disposal and with the help of a life coach (actually, my wife), I was able to align them so that I’m assured of victory over Murphy.

Great strategy Herman! Keep that Mopey away from you too. Thanks for joining the “Half-Full” conversation. All the best.
