Hitchhiking the Blogosphere: One Man’s Journey to SOBCon

by Starbucker on April 2, 2007

There was much news on the SOBCon07 front yesterday (register now!) , first with the announcement of another excellent guest speaker, Andy Sernovitz.Andy is the author of “Word of Mouth Marketing: How Smart Companies Get People Talking“, and is considered one of the foremost “gurus” on the subject. He’s perfect for SOBCon because after all, isn’t blogging just another word of mouth tool?

If you were looking for that extra little “push” to register and come to Chicago, here it is!

On another note, I was intrigued by a blog post I saw the other day from Jesse Petersen, entitled “I Want to go to SOBCon 07” . This wasn’t the first time I’ve noticed him – back in December, Liz Strauss posted his essay “I Want to Make a Difference, Too“, which I thought was a very brave and noble public statement of his intentions.

Jesse really wants to go to SOBCon, but is limited financially. Thus, he has decided to literally “hitchhike” the blogosphere and ask his fellow bloggers and readers to help him raise the funds to come.

Why? Says Jesse, “Who blogs passionately wouldn’t want to be in Chicago on May 11-12? The list of speakers and registered attendees is a veritable cornucopia of knowledge, wisdom, and enthusiasm for life and success. We all want to be successful and to make a difference, and this is a great investment toward that goal. A gathering of minds like this will broaden your view of the world and allow you to focus your energy on what matters to you and your readers.”

And yes, if you invest in his journey he will give you something in return – a virtual diary of his experience at SOBCon.

Check out Jesse’s post, and see if you could pitch in a few bucks. He’s already raised his registration fee and airfare.

And for those of you who are in the same situation and really would like to get to Chicago, perhaps you should take Jesse’s lead and also “virtually” stick out your thumb – I think you’d be very surprised by the help and support out in the blogosphere.

SOBCon is really more than just a conference – as I noted on my last post on the event website, “it will be something you will remember for the rest of your lives!”

C’mon, join us. And good on you Jesse – see ya in Chicago!
