Here I sit at my computer, writing my 300th post to this blog.
300.
The previous significance of this number to me was the perfect bowling score I never achieved (I got a 277 once), or a great batting average of my favorite baseball players (I was a big Milwaukee Brewers fan growing up).
Now it signifies the sheer quantity of musings, ramblings, observations, kudos, links, reminiscences, tributes, lists, belief statements and general “stuff” that I’ve managed to type out over the past 13+ months.
Has it been worth it? Oh yes -many, many times over.
Have I learned something? Yes again.
Have I made many new friends and expanded my world in a way I never thought possible? You betcha.
What about this glass I keep talking about – is it still half full? Interestingly, since I started blogging I’ve had the opportunity to examine this question from lots of different angles and perspectives. I looked under the glass, inside the glass, over the glass – as Ben Yoskovitz would joke with me, heck, I BECAME the glass.
As can happen with things like this, rather than getting a distinct and final answer more questions have been generated about the glass, like:
- How big is the glass?
- What color is the glass?
- What liquid is in the glass?
- What is the glass resting on?
To these questions, I say – “to each their own“. Just like everybody is different in their own way, so goes everyone’s half full glass. Viva la difference!
Actually, my half full glass morphs into something different nearly every day – one time it might be a little shot glass half full of a fine cognac, and another day it might be a bucket half-full of sparkling water. That, to me, is what “realistic optimism” is all about – it’s taking the reality in front of you and “molding” it to fit an underlying optimistic intent.
Does this work all the time? Can my glass be empty (or too full) on occasion? Yep, it happens. Yet, I have found that writing about the process as I have for these 300 posts has deepened my appreciation and understanding of the importance of a philosophical underpinning like “Half-Fullism”, and has heightened my awareness of those unbalanced times (and dare I say has sped up the recoveries).
Of equal importance, the dialogue I have forged with all of you has been invaluable to me in looking at this half full glass, so I offer my deep appreciation and thanks.
Bottom line, I think I’m going to stick with this little “hobby” a while longer – there are many more permutations of this glass to examine and ponder. Thanks for joining me in this journey of discovery!

Congratulations on achieving this milestone! Making connections is one of the benefits of blogging that I enjoy the most. Sharing a cup of coffee with someone you’ve only known through their online voice is a great experience.
So if you ever pass through Austin, let me know. The Starbucks is on me!
– Connie (aka Belle)
Ho‘omaika‘i ‘ana Terry, congratulations with an aloha hug! Our blog reading became so much better when ‘Starbucker’ set your glass down on our webby online table, and now our cup runneth over. Keep writing, for we keep loving you, drinking up each great tasting drop.
Thanks Connie and Rosa!
Connie, I love Austin, and when I do get there soon I’ll be happy to take you up on your Starbucks offer.
Rosa, that hug goes right back at’cha! You have always been an inspiration from the very beginning of my blogging journey, and I thank you for your kind words.
All the best to you both!
Congrats! The reason you’re still going strong is because you’re willing to share your passions, beliefs and musings with us.
Together, we get to walk a path of discovery and friendship. That’s why we keep coming back for more.
So keep pouring — we all want our glasses topped off with another 300+ posts!
Drew
So instead of the Caddyshack mantra of “Be the ball” yours is Be the Glass.
I like it and think you should get shirts made. Buttons and stickers too. It could be the next phenomenon.
May All Zeros Know Their Unlimited Future
(A little Captcha Motivation for ya.)
Thanks Drew and Chris for stopping by, and for your kind words of encouragement.
Drew, I’ll certainly keep pouring if you keep drinking!
Chris, you may be onto something…..stay tuned for the “Ramblings emporium”! Can you help me with that?
All the best to you both.
Or, could it be more: “half glass full” as President Bush said of Dick Cheney.
Seriously, congratulations! I enjoy “knowing” you and we’d never have met without blogging.
If you’re ever in Albuquerque, we’ll take you to a local chaing which I think is much better than Starbucks! Always good to try new things, heh?
Thanks Mary! I saw that “half glass full” quote today – it just does’t have that same ring to it as glass half full, does it?
If I’m ever in Albuquerque, you are on! I have been known to go into another coffee place -ask the Des Moines bloggers. All the best.
