Today I hit the road again, this time to Montana via Northwest Airlines, for a week of visits throughout the state. After some not-so-wonderful travel experiences in the past couple of trips, I was relieved to have a relatively stress-free day at the airports and in the air. In fact, I’m pleased to cite one particular instance that stood out for me as an exception for what passes as “usual” customer service at the airlines these days.
I was boarding my connecting flight to Bozeman in the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport and was greeted with a very pleasant “good morning” by the flight attentant. I immediately noticed what looked like steam or smoke coming out of all the overhead compartments. The attendant saw me staring and immediately explained that all was normal – it was being caused by the air conditioning, due to the very high outside temperatures (it was in the high 90’s).
I was one of the first ones on the plane, and sat pretty close to the front so I had a good view of all the other passengers boarding the plane. Not surprisingly, about 80% of them also noticed the steam, and each and every time the attendant patiently and pleasantly provided the same explanation he gave to me. Not once did he betray any frustration or annoyance that he had to keep repeating this over and over (and over) again.
I know that this was his job, but nevertheless, that smile he kept on his face still impressed me – and his service during the flight was top notch as well. I wish I could have gotten his name, but I’ll just have to commend him via this post – well done, and thanks for a welcome demonstration of “service with a smile”.

Great post starbucker. I think getting his name was key because it is part of a long chain of events (things like random act of kindness, remembering names for future service etc) are a part of this deal. The first thing I seek out is a name to build that relationship with the person serving me etc. But great post and enjoyed reading it!
Harsha, thanks for stopping by. I agree with you – I should have gotten this person’s name. Hopefully I will see him again on another flight – I will be sure to recognize him since he left such a good impression. Thanks again, and all the best!
